Eccotemp L5 Portable Propane Water Heater
This review is from: Eccotemp L5 Portable Water Heater and Outdoor Shower (Tools & Home Improvement) Used this heater with stored water in a black 55 gallon drum paired with a Surflo 12V pump. It worked perfectly. You need to supply water pressure to this unit in order for it to work so don’t assume that putting a hose into a drum, and then you will get hot water. Get a 12V pump ($45)and hook it to a car or ATV battery and you have water pressure to run the water heater. Ignition for firing this unit is from two D batteries so you do not need electricity for that. The unit needs to be kept from freezing. Since I was using this in the fall in Alaska, I built a little cart on wheels that had mounted on it, the water heater, 25# propane bottle, shower head, and battery so all I had to do was wheel it out in the evening and then back in after drying off from showering. The 55 gallon drum stayed outdoors so even with the water temp being 52F in the drum, it supplied water of 98F. Not really hot but good for a shower. If you plan to use this in warmer climates where you can give it water in the 60 degree range, it should deliver water hotter than you need. The manufacturer says a 35 degree temperature rise but my unit did better than that. The shower head and hose a pretty cheap and flimsy so I installed my own. I also bought this same pump for a friend who has a hunting cabin off the grid and it works extremely well there as well. If you can store water where it is warmed prior to supplying it to this heater you will be a happy camper. Buy a little Sunforce 22005 folding solar panel ($50) to keep the battery you supply for the water pump and you are ready. PROS Low price Ease of use Continuous flow of hot water with manufacturer recommended incoming water temp and supply of propane. Low propane use Light and easily portable No power needed for ignition Good for off grid use Excellent for power outages (you still need stored water and a 12v pump with battery. CONS Water must be at least in the 60 degree range for most people to be happy with a HOT shower Construction of heater cheap Water output at 1.5GPM. Good for shower but that is it Cheap flimsy shower head and hose 4.0 out of 5 starsĀ Worth the money as long as you are not expecting the same shower you get at home, March 28, 2014 By Tridogdude (Alaska)
